Minnesota runs a November rut. The DNR's hunter education handbook puts the peak the week of November 12, when half the adult does have been bred, and says the first does are bred in October. The DNR publishes no dates by region, so the small north to south stagger in the windows below is our estimate.

We found no Minnesota DNR fetal or conception-date study, so the timing here comes from the DNR's hunter education program. Its White-tailed Deer Handbook (2000) says the rut peaks the week of November 12, when half the adult does have been bred, and that the first does are bred in October.
Newer DNR documents point the same way: a 2025 report to the Legislature says the rut typically comes in early November, when buck movement picks up, and the DNR's natural history page says deer mate from November to early December. The windows above peak near November 12, but none of these sources gives regional dates, so their north to south stagger is our estimate.

By rule the firearms opener is the Saturday nearest November 6, and the 2026 dates are:
Archery covers every window on this page, and both firearms seasons are open during the DNR's peak week of November 12. A later opener gives bowhunters more of the rut: when it moved from November 4 in 2023 to November 9 in 2024, archers took 32 percent more adult bucks than their average for the two seasons before.

Minnesota hunters registered about 186,000 deer in 2025, up 9 percent from 2024, and about 106,000 of them were antlered bucks. Bowhunters took about 30,000 deer, about 13,600 of them antlered bucks, and crossbows made up half the archery harvest.
Roughly half the harvest comes on the first two firearms weekends, and the DNR said breeding activity lined up with the 2025 firearms season, which opened November 8.

The DNR's 1,521 wildlife management areas cover about 1.4 million acres of field, forest and wetland, and Minnesota's 56 state forests take in about 3 million acres, open to hunting except in a few portions. National forests and federal waterfowl production areas round out the public land hunted most.
Walk-In Access adds about 23,000 acres of private land at more than 230 sites, open September 1 to May 31 to anyone with a Walk-In Access validation, no landowner contact needed.

The calendar says when the rut runs in Minnesota. Whether your next sit is worth your best spot comes down to the ground you hunt and what you've seen on it, and that is the call RackIQ makes: The Scored Call™, checked afterward. The more hunts you log, the sharper it gets.

The week of November 12, according to the DNR's hunter education handbook, when half the adult does have been bred. Newer DNR documents say the rut typically comes in early November and deer mate from November to early December.
The DNR has not published regional dates. It describes one statewide rut with does in heat over a very narrow period, so the small north to south stagger in the windows on this page is our estimate.
The DNR says mature bucks are on the move hunting for the first does in heat from the last half of October, and the peak comes the week of November 12. In 2026 archery runs September 19 to December 31 and the firearms season opens November 7.
