Michigan Whitetail Rut Dates & Deer Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

The Michigan DNR names October and November as the deer breeding season but publishes no peak date and no split between the peninsulas. The windows below are our estimate inside that span, and the sections after them carry the 2026 seasons, harvest, public land and rules.

Rut windows by region

Upper Peninsula

Nov 5 to 20

Peak: mid-November, our estimate

Big woods and snow country.

Northern Lower Peninsula

Nov 6 to 18

Peak: mid-November, our estimate

Regional estimates, and your area can vary. Where these dates come from is below.

Where do the Michigan rut dates come from?

We found no Michigan DNR breeding or conception study, so no measured peak sits behind these windows. The DNR's nuisance-deer guidance names October and November as the breeding season, the closest it comes to dating the rut.

The windows above are our estimate, set inside that span. The DNR gives no peak day and no split between the peninsulas, so the small stagger between regions is ours.

How do the 2026 seasons in Michigan line up with the rut?

For 2026 Michigan cut its December firearm and muzzleloader seasons to three days and closed every deer season by January 1:

Every window here opens in bow season and runs into the first week of gun season. Bowhunters have the early part to themselves, and in the November 10 to 14 quiet period no rifle, or shotgun with slugs or buckshot, can be carried afield. From the November 15 opener, bowhunters wear orange too.

How many deer do Michigan hunters take?

The latest DNR harvest survey we found covers 2024: about 373,000 deer, up almost 8 percent from 2023, with the gains in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula. Bucks held steady (up 1 percent) while the antlerless harvest rose 18 percent.

We found no 2025 survey estimate. By December 4, 2025, hunters had reported about 215,000 deer, about 141,000 of them antlered, and the DNR says reported numbers run below the real harvest.

Where is the public ground in Michigan?

The DNR manages more than 4.5 million acres of public land open to hunting, and the Hiawatha, Huron-Manistee and Ottawa national forests offer hunting too. Another 2.2 million acres of private timber in the Commercial Forest Program are open on foot, with no nails, bolts or tree steps allowed.

The Hunting Access Program leases private land for public hunting, first come, first served, with a daily sign-in at each property. On public land, stands must be portable, can go up September 1 and come down by March 1, and screw-in steps are illegal.
