Indiana Whitetail Rut Dates & Deer Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

Indiana's rut peaks in early to mid-November, and it runs on a gradient. The DNR studied 17 years of deer-vehicle collisions, 2003 to 2019, and put the average peak at November 10, with county peaks from November 2 to 16: earliest in the northeast, latest in the southwest. The windows below follow its county groups.

Rut windows by region

North and east Indiana

Nov 4 to 11

Peak: Nov 7 to 8

November 7 across the northern tier, November 8 through the middle and down the east side. Ohio County is the state's earliest at November 2; Wells, Blackford and Jay run later, November 13.

Northwest and west-central Indiana

Nov 8 to 12

Peak: Nov 10

From Lake and Porter south along the Illinois line to Vigo, and in as far as Boone, Hendricks, Morgan and Monroe. Newton County runs later, November 14.

Southern Indiana

Nov 8 to 15

Peak: Nov 11

Johnson, Shelby, Rush and Decatur south to the Ohio River. Floyd and Warrick peak earliest, November 8; Jackson November 14 and Posey November 15.

Southwest Indiana

Nov 12 to 16

Peak: Nov 14

Knox, Daviess, Martin, Greene and Sullivan, the DNR's latest group. Daviess, at November 16, is the latest county in the state.

Where do the Indiana rut dates come from?

Indiana has never run the spring herd health checks that date conception from fetuses, so DNR biologists dated the rut from about 133,000 deer-vehicle collisions over 17 years, 2003 to 2019, treating the day collisions peak as peak breeding. Statewide that day averaged November 10 and fell between November 6 and 14 every year, with no drift over time.

County by county the peaks run from November 2 to 16, earliest in the northeast and latest in the southwest. The cards follow the DNR's own county groups: November 7 across the northern tier, November 8 in the north-central and eastern counties, November 10 on the west side, November 11 across the south and November 14 in Knox, Daviess, Martin, Greene and Sullivan. Each window spans that card's county peaks, and the notes name any outliers.

How do the 2026 seasons in Indiana line up with the rut?

The 2026 to 2027 seasons, with deer reduction zones open only in designated areas:

Archery is open for every county peak the DNR mapped. Firearms season opens the first Saturday after November 11, November 14 in 2026, about a week after the north and east peak and the same day the southwest group peaks. In 2025 the opening weekend alone produced 22 percent of the year's deer.

How many deer do Indiana hunters take?

Indiana hunters reported about 131,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 season, up 4 percent from the season before. Just under 63,000 were antlered, the highest antlered harvest since reporting began in 1951.

Firearms season produced 61 percent of the harvest and archery about 30 percent.

Where is the public ground in Indiana?

The DNR's fish and wildlife division manages over 170,000 acres, including fish and wildlife areas and wildlife management areas, and reservoir properties and state forests add more than 200,000 acres. The Hoosier National Forest covers about 200,000 more.

Reserved hunt draws open select state and federal properties to hunters, and the Indiana Private Lands Access Program opens private ground through the same draw, with no trail cameras or feed allowed. On DNR land, stands must be portable and can stay up overnight from noon September 15 to January 10.
