Kentucky Whitetail Rut Dates & Deer Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

Kentucky runs a tight mid-November rut. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife maps the peak by physiographic region as a 10-year average: the Inner Bluegrass first on November 11, the Bluegrass Hills on November 13, both Appalachian regions on November 17, and the Western Coal Fields, Purchase and South Central on November 20 and 21.

Where do the Kentucky rut dates come from?

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife maps the peak of the rut by physiographic region, and each date is a 10-year average. The Inner Bluegrass peaks first, on November 11, then the Bluegrass Hills on November 13. Both Appalachian regions peak November 17, the Western Coal Fields November 20, and the Purchase and South Central regions November 21.

The department calls it a relatively tight, synchronous rut whose peak varies only slightly across the state. The windows above are centered on those dates: November 13 for the Bluegrass, November 17 for eastern Kentucky and November 21 for south-central and western Kentucky. The week on either side of each peak is our estimate, not the department's.

How do the 2026 seasons in Kentucky line up with the rut?

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife times its modern gun season to coincide with the rut, and the 2026 to 2027 dates are:

The Bluegrass peaks on November 11 and 13 come just before the gun opener, when only archery and crossbow are open statewide. The later peaks, November 17 to 21, land early in modern gun season, when bow and crossbow hunters must wear hunter orange too.

How many deer do Kentucky hunters take?

Kentucky hunters took about 145,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 season, the fifth-highest total on record. Just over 74,000 were antlered bucks and about 63,000 were does, and nearly 70 percent of the males taken were estimated at two and a half years or older.

November alone produced about 106,000 deer, and 69 percent of the season's harvest came during the modern gun season.

Where is the public ground in Kentucky?

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife owns, leases or manages nearly 1.7 million acres on more than 130 public areas, more than half of it in the department's Southeast Region. Hunting Access Areas open private land to public hunting through agreements with landowners.

Some public land is hunted by quota draw. For 2025 to 2026, about 9,000 hunters applied for about 3,800 spots on 36 deer quota hunts, with applications taken in September. Hunters took about 7,400 deer on public land that season, and Peabody WMA led the state's WMAs with nearly 600.
