MassWildlife puts the peak breeding period at November 6 to 20 for the whole state, and it repeated those dates in November 2025. It says the rut comes at about the same time every fall because daylight sets it, not weather or the moon. Breeding as a whole runs late October to early December.
The agency cites no fetal or conception study and gives no regional split, so the window here is its statewide November 6 to 20. Its harvest chart boxes the rut in yellow, and the antlered kill climbs sharply inside it as bucks move in daylight and drop their guard.

MassWildlife's 2026 to 2027 seasons, statewide unless zones are named, with no Sunday hunting:
Archery is the only season open through the November 6 to 20 peak, and two of those days, November 8 and 15, are Sundays this year. Shotgun opens November 30, which MassWildlife says can overlap the post-rut, and its tip then is to walk deer up out of their beds. Breeding still runs into early December.

Hunters set a record in the 2025 to 2026 seasons with about 16,700 deer, up 11 percent from the season before, and just under 9,000 were adult bucks. That count includes the winter 2026 season and damage permits.
Archery took about 7,300 deer, also a record, and just over half the adult bucks, about 4,500. Shotgun took about 6,400 deer and the muzzleloader season about 2,600.

MassWildlife looks after about 239,000 acres, including 238 wildlife management areas and 132 conservation easements, and almost all of its land is open to hunting. You can hunt WMAs regardless of town firearm bylaws, and the easements are private land open to all hunters. The MassWildlife Lands Viewer maps both.
Most state parks and state forests are open to hunting too. There, permanent tree stands are banned, and a stand can stay up no more than 30 days.
