Colorado Parks and Wildlife says white-tailed deer breed from October to December and publishes no rut dates by region, so the windows below, for the eastern plains river bottoms, are our estimate inside that season. The sections after them carry the 2026 seasons, harvest, public land and rules.

We found no breeding study and no regional rut dates from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. CPW's whitetail page says only that deer breed from October to December, and a CPW news release from Durango in October 2024 put the deer rut's peak at mid-November through December.
The windows above are our estimate for the plains whitetail, inside CPW's October to December breeding season. CPW's one stated peak, mid-November through December, came in a release from Durango, in southwest Colorado, far from the plains. To fight CWD on the plains, CPW shifted whitetail buck licenses to the early season and mule deer buck licenses to the late seasons, to raise buck harvest in each species' breeding season.

Colorado runs separate plains deer seasons east of I-25, and the main 2026 dates are:
Every window here falls in plains archery, between the plains rifle season's November 3 close and the late season's December 1 opener. All plains deer licenses are limited, and west of I-25 the third and fourth rifle seasons overlap the windows.

CPW estimated about 408,000 deer after the 2025 season, up from about 384,000 a year earlier, and recommended about 5,600 more deer licenses for 2026, though fewer in the Northeast and Southeast.
On the plains, the South Platte River herd averaged about 750 deer a year from 2015 to 2024, about 370 of them bucks, and the Arikaree herd's buck harvest fell to about 160 in 2024, its lowest since 2015.

Colorado has more than 23 million acres of public land, but whitetail country is mostly private. Public land covers about 2 percent of the South Platte River herd's range and 1 percent of the Arikaree's, and 89 percent of the Arkansas River herd's range is private. The Pawnee National Grassland, 193,000 acres in GMUs 87 and 88, is the big exception.
CPW's roughly 350 State Wildlife Areas take a hunting or fishing license or an SWA pass to enter, and 973,000 acres of State Trust Land are open through an access program. On the eastern plains, many yellow-signed Walk-In Access properties allow big game from September 1 through December, on foot, with a small game license and habitat stamp.

CPW gives no plains whitetail peak; it says deer breed from October to December. Its one stated peak, mid-November through December, came in a 2024 release from Durango, in southwest Colorado. The windows on this page are our estimate.
On the eastern plains CPW puts them mostly along the rivers. In the Arikaree herd, they concentrate along the Arikaree River and its tributaries and the North Fork of the Republican.
Plains archery runs October 1 to December 31, closed during the plains rifle seasons. Plains rifle runs October 24 to November 3 and late plains rifle December 1 to 14, so most of November on the plains is archery only.
