Arizona's whitetail are Coues deer, a small, gray desert subspecies of the southeastern mountains. Arizona Game and Fish says their rut usually runs from December through February, and its own guides call December the peak and January the end of it. That is well after the November rut most whitetail hunters know.
Note: "whitetail" in Arizona means Coues deer, a true whitetail subspecies that ruts in winter. Game and Fish does not publish a measured peak date, so the window below is the department's stated rutting season. Arizona's mule deer breed in winter too, and the department gives no dates for them.
Dec 1 to Feb 28
Peak: December, per Game and Fish
The department calls January the end of the rut.

Arizona's whitetail are Coues deer, and the Arizona Game and Fish Department says their rutting season usually runs from December through February. The department does not publish a measured peak date. Its southern Arizona wildlife viewing guide calls December the peak of the Coues rut and January the end of it, and a 2008 article by two of its biologists describes a late December hunt in southeastern Arizona as falling during the rut.
The window above is the department's stated rutting season, December through February. Game and Fish has not published a measured peak date that we could find, so the December peak comes from its own guides rather than from a study.

Arizona hunts deer by draw, unit by unit, plus over-the-counter archery tags. For Coues whitetail in 2026 to 2027:
The hunts that land in the department's December through February rut are the December general hunts in some units and the over-the-counter archery seasons from December 11 through January 31. A January archery hunt needs a new tag bought for the new year, and January 31 is the last day of any deer season in the 2026 to 2027 regulations.

In the 2025 draw hunts, Arizona hunters took about 10,600 deer, including about 5,100 whitetail bucks and 5,300 mule deer bucks, and 35 percent of hunters filled a tag, according to the department's harvest questionnaire.
Over-the-counter archery added about 1,550 deer, 490 of them whitetail bucks. About 20,000 archers hunted on those tags, and 8 percent of them took a deer.

Arizona Game and Fish says Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and State of Arizona lands are generally open for hunting, while National Parks and some National Monuments and State Parks are not. Arizona's six national forests cover 11.25 million acres, and the BLM manages 12.1 million more.
The State of Arizona manages 13 percent of the state. A State Land No Trespassing sign keeps out anyone without a permit, but a properly licensed hunter lawfully taking wildlife counts as a permittee. Tribal lands cover 28 percent of Arizona, and each tribe sets its own hunting rules.

A date on a calendar can't tell you which spot to sit. RackIQ weighs the rut phase for your part of Arizona against the wind, your way in, the pressure already on the ground and what you've seen there, then says hunt it or save it. The Scored Call™ is checked afterward, and every hunt you log makes the next call sharper.
